Privacy
Your snippets and everything you copy stay on your PC. Nothing is uploaded and nothing syncs.
Your keys
To know when you finish a code, WinType holds only your last 32 characters, in memory. They are cleared on Enter, Tab, Escape, the arrow keys, a shortcut, and when you switch to another window (or another box, in apps that tell Windows which box you are in). They are never saved and never sent.
What WinType keeps, on your PC
- Your snippets, and how often each one was used.
- What you copy: text, links, pictures, colours, code and file lists, with the app it came from and when. Kept forever unless you choose 90, 30, 7 days or one.
- Everything is in one folder,
%LOCALAPPDATA%\WinType. Clear History in Settings deletes your copies for good (those on a board too, if you tick it); uninstalling asks whether to delete the folder too.
What it never keeps
- Copies from password managers (1Password, Bitwarden, KeePass and others are on the list from the start; you can add apps).
- Any copy an app marks as private or not for history, as Windows asks apps to.
- Anything you copy while saving is paused.
A browser extension that copies a password into a web page may not mark it: add that browser to the list, or pause saving, if that matters to you.
The two things it sends
- The daily update check to
wintype.zeronine.workers.dev, with WinType's version and nothing else. Updates are signed and checked before they install. - Anonymous stats, once a day, which you can switch off in Settings, About: counts, choices and how WinType itself runs, like how many codes fired (in rough buckets), the theme, the version of Windows, WinType's own memory and where it crashed in its own code. Never text, a code, an app name, a site or a time of day. Each PC has a random id so it is counted once; turning the stats off deletes it.
WinType never fetches link previews or site icons, and this page loads nothing from any other site.
The lock and its limits
You can lock WinType with Windows Hello or a PIN so nobody at your PC sees your history. No app can protect you from malware that runs as you: it can read anything you can, WinType included, while it is unlocked. Your disk's own encryption (Windows' BitLocker or Device Encryption) protects the folder when the PC is off; Settings, Security says whether yours is on.
WinType never asks for admin.
